RESET I

PSALM 51

1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions.

2 Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.

7 Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

11 Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me.

12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

15 Open my lips, Lord, and my mouth will declare your praise.

16 You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.

17 My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise.

PREVAIL

PREVAIL

I SAMUEL 17:48-54 When the Philistine arose and came and drew near to meet David, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet the Philistine. 49 And David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone and slung it and struck the Philistine on his forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the ground.

50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him. There was no sword in the hand of David.

51 Then David ran and stood over the Philistine and took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him and cut off his head with it. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled.

52 And the men of Israel and Judah rose with a shout and pursued the Philistines as far as Gath and the gates of Ekron, so that the wounded Philistines fell on the way from Shaaraim as far as Gath and Ekron.

53 And the people of Israel came back from chasing the Philistines, and they plundered their camp.

54 And David took the head of the Philistine and brought it to Jerusalem, but he put his armor in his tent.

BIG QUESTION: SURVIVAL OR SUCCESS

            PREVENTION OR PREVAILING

I SAMUEL 17:51 Then David ran and stood over the Philistine and took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him and cut off his head with it. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled.

I SAMUEL 17:54 And David took the head of the Philistine and brought it to Jerusalem, but he put his armor in his tent.

THE PROBLEM

Romans 12:1-3  Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.

2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

    PATTERNS DETERMINE OUR EFFECTIVENESS

We are Not the Sum of our Experiences, We are the Product of our Patterns

PATTERNS are ROUTINES, ROUTINES are about DECISIONS

DECISIONS (or PATTERNS) DETERMINE our EFFECTIVENESS

DECISIONS are made IN THE MIND, Not in EXPERIENCE

The PROBLEM isn’t ABILITY, it’s MENTALITY

You are CAPABLE of MORE than you THINK you are,

the PROBLEM is what you THINK, you BELIEVE

Romans 12:2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

The WORLDS Way - “YOU DO YOU”

I JOHN 2:16 For everything in the world--the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life--comes not from the Father but from the world.

Wanting your own Way,

    Wanting Everything for Yourself,

        Wanting to Appear Important

Word of God - logos - logic - thinking

I CORINTHIANS 11:1 Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.

OUR PATTERN - I JOHN 2:16

Wanting your own Way,

    Wanting Everything for Yourself,

        Wanting to Appear Important

LUKE 9:23  Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.

TO BE EFFECTIVE, YOU HAVE TO FOLLOW THE PATTERN

  • Problem isn’t the Process
    • Everyone is IN Process
  • Problem isn’t the Preparation
    • Fail to Plan, Plan to Fail
  • Problem isn’t the Passion
    • What You’re Passionate About You’ll Suffer For
  • The Problem is the Pattern

I CORINTHIANS 11:1 And you should imitate me, just as I imitate Christ.

CONCLUSION

Imitation leads to Consecration or Limitation

YOU DO YOU” - not Unique - Limiting

MATTHEW 6:31-34 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32For the pagans run after all these things…

2CORINTHIANS 5:17 This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!

READINESS < PREPARED

PREPARATION > POTENTIAL

YOU WILL ALWAYS LIVE AT THE LEVEL OF YOUR PREPARATION, NOT YOUR POTENTIAL

TEXT: JOHN 12:1-7 Six days before the Passover celebration began, Jesus arrived in Bethany, the home of Lazarus—the man he had raised from the dead. 2 A dinner was prepared in Jesus’ honor. Martha served, and Lazarus was among those who ate with him. 3 Then Mary took a twelve-ounce jar of expensive perfume made from essence of nard, and she anointed Jesus’ feet with it, wiping his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance.

4 But Judas Iscariot, the disciple who would soon betray him, said, 5 “That perfume was worth a year’s wages. It should have been sold and the money given to the poor.” 6 Not that he cared for the poor—he was a thief, and since he was in charge of the disciples’ money, he often stole some for himself.

7 Jesus replied, “Leave her alone. She did this in preparation for my burial. 8 You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.”

The Real Holy Spirit - The Production & The Process

The Real Holy Spirit - The Production & The Process

Romans 8:1-4 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but (live) according to the Spirit.

Galatians 5:22 But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!

Matthew 22:37-40 “‘You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’f 40 The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.”

Before You Can Have Production You Have to Have Process

When You’re In Process, You Take More Pleasure in the Pain Because the Pain is What Leads You to Progress

Philippians 1:6 And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.

BIG IDEA: We are Sinful by Nature

But Christ IN us is by the Law of the SPIRIT is MORE Powerful than our Nature

Romans 7:18-25 And I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. I want to do what is right, but I can’t.

19 I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway.

20 But if I do what I don’t want to do, I am not really the one doing wrong; it is sin living in me that does it.

21 I have discovered this principle of life—that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong.

22 I love God’s law with all my heart.

23 But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me.

24 Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death?

25 Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord. So you see how it is: In my mind I really want to obey God’s law, but because of my sinful nature I am a slave to sin.

THE REAL HOLY SPIRIT - THE PERFORMANCE

1 Corinthians 12:12-14  Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. 13) For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body -whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free - and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.  14) Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many.

Introduction:  Paul’s writings show that the Holy Spirit was just as real and personal to him as Jesus was.  He recognized the important place the Spirit had in the Church, in his ministry, and in the lives of individual believers.

I. In the Church

1) The Gifts of the Spirit

Charismata - “freely and graciously given gifts.”

The gifts of the Spirit are necessary if the Church is to continue the work of Jesus as He intended in this age

1 Corinthians 12:11  All these (gifts) are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one,  just as he determines.

 2) Understanding of the Spirit

Ephesians 1:17 It is the Spirit who gives spiritual wisdom and insight so that you might grow in your knowledge of God.

3) Unity of the Spirit

1 Corinthians 12:13  We have all been baptized into one body by one Spirit, and we all share the same Spirit.

Ephesians 4:3  Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.

    II. In Ministry

 1) The Word of God

2) The Fruit of the Spirit

The fruit of the Spirit is still the key.

Romans 5:5  God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

3) The Dwelling Place of the Holy Spirit

The body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. 1 Corinthians 6:19

III. In Our Lives

1) Adoption by the Spirit

Galatians 4:6  Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, Abba, Father.

Romans 8:15  The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.  And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”

2) Renewal by the Spirit

If fruit is desired it must be cultivated.

3) Victory by the Spirit

2 Corinthians 5:5  It is God who has made us for this very purpose and has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.

The Real Holy Spirit - The Power

ACTS 1:1-9 In my first book I told you, Theophilus, about everything Jesus began to do and teach 2 until the day he was taken up to heaven after giving his chosen apostles further instructions through the Holy Spirit.
3 During the forty days after his crucifixion, he appeared to the apostles from time to time, and he proved to them in many ways that he was actually alive. And he talked to them about the Kingdom of God.
4 Once when he was eating with them, he commanded them, “Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised, as I told you before. 5 John baptized with water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
6 So when the apostles were with Jesus, they kept asking him, “Lord, has the time come for you to free Israel and restore our kingdom?”
7 He replied, “The Father alone has the authority to set those dates and times, and they are not for you to know. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
9 After saying this, he was taken up into a cloud while they were watching, and they could no longer see him.

ACTS 2:1-4; 14-21 On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place.
2 Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting.
3 Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them.
4 And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.
14 Then Peter stepped forward with the eleven other apostles and shouted to the crowd, …

BIG QUESTION: “Why do I need the Baptism of Holy Spirit? Don’t I receive the Holy Spirit when I receive Christ”

Acts 1:4 “Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised, as I told you before.” (ref. Luke 24:49)

Acts 2:4 … all the believers were meeting together in one place.

2 Corinthians 13:11-14

11-13 And that’s about it, friends. Be cheerful. Keep things in good repair. Keep your spirits up. Think in harmony. Be agreeable. Do all that, and the God of love and peace will be with you for sure. Greet one another with a holy embrace. All the brothers and sisters here say hello.

HANDLE WITH CARE - TOGETHER WE'RE BETTER

EPHESIANS 2:7-15

7-10 Now God has us where he wants us, with all the time in this world and the next to shower grace and kindness upon us in Christ Jesus. Saving is all his idea, and all his work. All we do is trust him enough to let him do it. It’s God’s gift from start to finish! We don’t play the major role. If we did, we’d probably go around bragging that we’d done the whole thing! No, we neither make nor save ourselves. God does both the making and saving. He creates each of us by Christ Jesus to join him in the work he does, the good work he has gotten ready for us to do, work we had better be doing.

11-13 But don’t take any of this for granted. It was only yesterday that you outsiders to God’s ways had no idea of any of this, didn’t know the first thing about the way God works, hadn’t the faintest idea of Christ. You knew nothing of that rich history of God’s covenants and promises in Israel, hadn’t a clue about what God was doing in the world at large. Now because of Christ—dying that death, shedding that blood—you who were once out of it altogether are in on everything.

14-15 The Messiah has made things up between us so that we’re now together on this, both non-Jewish outsiders and Jewish insiders. He tore down the wall we used to keep each other at a distance. He repealed the law code that had become so clogged with fine print and footnotes that it hindered more than it helped. Then he started over. Instead of continuing with two groups of people separated by centuries of animosity and suspicion, he created a new kind of human being, a fresh start for everybody.

I PETER 3:8 Sympathize with each other. Love each other as brothers and sisters. Be tenderhearted, and keep a humble attitude.

ECCLESIASTES 4 9-12 Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. 10 If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble. 11 Likewise, two people lying close together can keep each other warm. But how can one be warm alone? 12 A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.

HEBREWS 4:15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are--yet he did not sin.

I PETER 3:9 Don’t repay evil for evil. Don’t retaliate with insults when people insult you. Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what God has called you to do, and he will grant you his blessing.

REVELATION 4:8 They were all eyes, seeing around and within. And they chanted night and day, never taking a break:

I JOHN 4:7-8 Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God. 8 But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love.

WHOLENESS THROUGH THE BROKEN

Isaiah 6:1-8 It was in the year King Uzziah died that I saw the Lord. He was sitting on a lofty throne, and the train of his robe filled the Temple. 2 Attending him were mighty seraphim, each having six wings. With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. 3 They were calling out to each other,

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of Heaven’s Armies! The whole earth is filled with his glory!”

4 Their voices shook the Temple to its foundations, and the entire building was filled with smoke.

5 Then I said, “It’s all over! I am doomed, for I am a sinful man. I have filthy lips, and I live among a people with filthy lips. Yet I have seen the King, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.”

6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a burning coal he had taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. 7 He touched my lips with it and said, “See, this coal has touched your lips. Now your guilt is removed, and your sins are forgiven.”

8 Then I heard the Lord asking, “Whom should I send as a messenger to this people? Who will go for us?” I said, “Here I am. Send me.”

Ephesians 4: 16 He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.

Proverbs 27:6 says Faithful are the wounds of a friend; But the kisses of an enemy are profuse.

HANDLE WITH CARE - THE SHAME GAME

I Peter 3:8-12

Finally, all of you should be of one mind. Sympathize with each other. Love each other as brothers and sisters. Be tenderhearted, and keep a humble attitude.

9 Don’t repay evil for evil. Don’t retaliate with insults when people insult you. Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what God has called you to do, and he will bless you for it.

10 For the Scriptures say, “If you want to enjoy life and see many happy days, keep your tongue from speaking evil and your lips from telling lies. 11 Turn away from evil and do good. Search for peace, and work to maintain it. 12 The eyes of the Lord watch over those who do right, and his ears are open to their prayers. But the Lord turns his face against those who do evil.”

“There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal. Nations, cultures, arts, civilizations - these are mortal, and their life is to ours as the life of a gnat. But it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub and exploit - immortal horrors or everlasting splendors. This does not mean that we are to be perpetually solemn. We must play. But our merriment must be of that kind (and it is, in fact, the merriest kind) which exists between people who have, from the outset, taken each other seriously - no flippancy, no superiority, no presumption.”

DEMONSTRATING HOPE

I Peter 1:3-9 May God be blessed, God the father of our Lord Jesus the Messiah! His mercy is abundant, and so he has become our father in a second birth in to a living hope through the resurrection from the dead of Jesus the Messiah.  4 This has brought us into an incorruptible inheritance, which nothing can stain or diminish. At the moment it is kept safe for you in the heavens, 5 while you are being kept safe by God’s power, through faith, for a rescue that is all ready and waiting to be revealed in the final time. 6 That is why you celebrate! Yes, it may well be necessary that, for a while, you may have to suffer trials and tests of all sorts 7 But this is so that the true values of your faith may be discovered. It is worth more than gold, which is tested by fire even though it can not be destroyed. The result will be praise, glory, and honor when Jesus the Messiah is revealed. 8 You love him, even though you’ve never seen him. And even though you don’t see him, you believe in him, and celebrate with a glorified joy that goes beyond anything words can say, 9 since you are receiving the proper goal of your faith — namely the rescue of your lives.

A LEGACY OF HOPE

Family Blessing 2017 -  A Legacy of Hope

Genesis 1:26-31

26 Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground.”

27 So God created human beings in his own image.

In the image of God he created them;

male and female he created them.

28 Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground.”

29 Then God said, “Look! I have given you every seed-bearing plant throughout the earth and all the fruit trees for your food.

30 And I have given every green plant as food for all the wild animals, the birds in the sky, and the small animals that scurry along the ground—everything that has life.” And that is what happened.

    1. Matthew 28:18 All authority in heaven and on earth” he said “has been given to me! 19 So you must go and make all the nations into disciples. Baptize them in the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy spirit. 20 Teach them to observe everything I have commanded you. 1. Deuteronomy 11:18-21 “So commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these words of mine. Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. 19 Teach them to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. 20 Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, 21 so that as long as the sky remains above the earth, you and your children may flourish in the land the LORD swore to give your ancestors.

      2. Colossians 3:16-17 Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. 17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
      3. Romans 5:12,17 Therefore, just as sin entered the world through     one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned— 17 For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!
