THE FLIP SIDE OF FEAR AND FAITH

MATTHEW 14:22-36

22-23 As soon as the meal was finished, he insisted that the disciples get in the boat and go on ahead to the other side while he dismissed the people. With the crowd dispersed, he climbed the mountain so he could be by himself and pray. He stayed there alone, late into the night.

24-26 Meanwhile, the boat was far out to sea when the wind came up against them and they were battered by the waves. At about four o’clock in the morning, Jesus came toward them walking on the water. They were scared out of their wits. “A ghost!” they said, crying out in terror.

27 But Jesus was quick to comfort them. “Courage, it’s me. Don’t be afraid.”

28 Peter, suddenly bold, said, “Master, if it’s really you, call me to come to you on the water.”

29-30 He said, “Come ahead.”

Jumping out of the boat, Peter walked on the water to Jesus. But when he looked down at the waves churning beneath his feet, he lost his nerve and started to sink. He cried, “Master, save me!”

31 Jesus didn’t hesitate. He reached down and grabbed his hand. Then he said, “Faint-heart, what got into you?”

32-33 The two of them climbed into the boat, and the wind died down. The disciples in the boat, having watched the whole thing, worshiped Jesus, saying, “This is it! You are God’s Son for sure!”

34-36 On return, they beached the boat at Gennesaret. When the people got wind that he was back, they sent out word through the neighborhood and rounded up all the sick, who asked for permission to touch the edge of his coat. And whoever touched him was healed.

FEAR IS ONLY NATURAL

STORMS DON’T REPRESENT BEING OUT OF GOD’S WILL

27 But Jesus was quick to comfort them. “Courage, it’s me. Don’t be afraid.”

FAITH COMES BY HEARING - ROMANS 10:17

HEBREWS 11:1 Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.

WITHOUT THE WORD (JESUS) WE CAN’T RESPOND IN FAITH

FEAR IS ONLY NATURAL, BUT FAITH IS SUPERNATURAL

PETER HEARS AND IS FILLED WITH FAITH

28 Peter, suddenly bold, said, “Master, if it’s really you, call me to come to you on the water.”

PROXIMITY TO JESUS PRODUCES PARTICIPATION IN THE SUPERNATURAL

29-30 He said, “Come ahead.”

Jumping out of the boat, Peter walked on the water to Jesus. But when he looked down at the waves churning beneath his feet, he lost his nerve and started to sink. He cried, “Master, save me!”

WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN WHAT YOU SEE CONTRADICTS WHAT YOU HEAR?

31a Jesus didn’t hesitate. He reached down and grabbed his hand.

JESUS DOESN’T HESITATE / JESUS ISN’T INTIMIDATED / JESUS ISN’T DISTANT

IT’S ALWAYS ABOUT JESUS

WE OFTEN FIND OURSELVES FACING FEAR IN THE MOST FAMILIAR SITUATION

EVEN IN THE MOST FAMILIAR SURROUNDINGS

WE ARE NOT CAPABLE WITHOUT THE GRACE OF JESUS

“Christ bade Peter come, not only that he might walk upon the water, and so know his Lord's power, but that he might know his own weakness.” MATTHEW HENRY

31 Jesus didn’t hesitate. He reached down and grabbed his hand. Then he said, “Faint-heart, what got into you?”

OF LITTLE FAITH — NOT A REBUKE

WHEN JESUS SAYS YOU CAN, YOU CAN

DID THE WIND BLOW YOU OFF COURSE — OR WAS THE STORM MEANT TO SEND YOU WHERE YOU NEEDED TO BE ALL ALONG

SOMETIMES YOU GO THRU THE STORM TO GET WHERE YOU NEED TO BE

SOMETIMES YOU GO THRU THE STORM TO BE WHERE                                                     SOMEONE ELSE NEEDS YOU TO BE

JOHN 5:24  “I tell you the truth, those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death into life.
